Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikivoyage or other free sources online. The northernmost of the country s four main islands, Hokkaid offers skiing, hiking, camping, motorcycling, biking, rafting, canoeing, fishing even bird-watching. Exciting nightlife in the larger cities lets you get into as much trouble as you want, while luxurious hot springs let you ease those troubles away. Hokkaid comprises one-fifth of the country s land mass, yet only 5% of the population lives here, in part because of the Siberian cold that descends from November to March. Paradoxically, winter is still a major tourist time. People come to enjoy the skiing and snowboarding, look at the frozen northern waters of Wakkanai and Rebun, or enjoy the ice sculptures of the Yuki Matsuri. The Ainu, Hokkaid s indigenous people, have shaped this island s history. Many of the names in the area, such as Sapporo and Noshappu, come from Ainu language. Though marginalised for much of the past century, the Ainu have recently won recognition as an important part of Japanese cultural heritage and are re-establishing themselves. Excellent museums can be found in Sapporo, Hakodate and Shir. This book offers information on Hokkaid and its most notable places.

Great Northern?: Swallows and Amazons, Book 12 ...

For anyone who loves sailing and adventure, Arthur Ransome's classic Swallows and Amazons series stands alone. Originally published over a half-century ago, the 12 books are still eagerly read by children and adults alike - by all those captivated by the world of adventure and imagination. Such longevity is not only due to Ransome’s unparalleled gift of storytelling, but also his championing of qualities such as independence and initiative; virtues that appeal to every generation, whether young or old. Great Northern? is the 12th, and final, book in Arthur Ransome's acclaimed series. Once again, the children set out on an adventure (this one off the coast of Scotland) with a minimum of parental advice and interference. Here, the story centers on a desperate race to thwart the efforts of pernicious egg collectors threatening the survival of a pair of rare birds not previously known to nest in British waters. Arthur Ransome was a prolific writer of children's books. Born in Leeds in 1884, it was his father, a nature-loving history professor, who inspired his love of the outdoors and nurtured a passion for fishing. As a child he enjoyed active, outdoor holidays: sailing, camping, and exploring the countryside. He used many of these holiday settings for his children's stories, notably the much-loved Swallows and Amazons, a book that sits comfortably in the category of ‘timeless classic’. In 1936 he won the first ever Carnegie Medal for the sixth book in the Swallows and Amazons series, Pigeon Post. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gareth Armstrong. British Columbia Adventure Guide: Adventure Gui...

From early explorers and Gold Rush days to modern times, British Columbia has always attracted visitors. Its rich landscape is filled with forests, glaciers, and rivers that draw outdoor enthusiasts; more rugged adventurers ride the Alaska Highway, an engineering marvel that cuts across the territory amid stunning scenery. Colossal mountains tower over behemoth rivers that carve gigantic valleys. Everything is giant sized, including the salmon, which draw eager anglers who fly into remote areas and compete only with grizzlies for the catch. Thousand-year-old Western red cedars in BC reach astounding sizes, and their trunks can measure up to 60 feet around. In the midst of all this lies Vancouver, consistently voted number one among North America's cities. Or visit Victoria, considered by many to be the nicest spot in North America. Scenic railways offer unique opportunities for relaxed sightseeing. Offshore are the Queen Charlotte Islands, where kayaking is a popular sport. This guide is produced by the authors of our best-selling Adventure Guide to the Inside Passage & Coastal Alaska. But here we tell you about everything British Columbia has to offer, from the often-photographed Butchart Gardens in Victoria to the Tatshenshini-Alsek Wilderness next to Alaska. It covers the parks, such as Yoho, Banff, Jasper, and Kootenay. Cities and towns are profiled in detail, with hundreds of restaurants, sightseeing, historic tours, and more. Accommodations are reviewed at all price levels, including five-star resorts, one-of-a-kind hotels, small B&Bs, and budget choices as well as camping and RV options. The authors point out when and where you're likely to spot wildlife - bears, moose, fish, and eagles - and offer tips on how to capture these animals on film. Recommended outfitters can take you flightseeing over glaciers, hiking into the wilderness, rafting over the rivers, or fishing in the mirror-still waters. All the details are here. 1. A Fisherman's Guide to Selected Lakes of Washin...

Most fishing guides offer very limited information on a large number of lakes, most of which their authors have never been near. This book provides detailed information on the lake and surrounding area, as well as directions and fishing tips. All lakes included in this book have been personally visited, photographed, and in most cases fished by the author. The emphasis is on the fisherman's perspective, but detailed trail and camping information is provided where applicable. The lakes selected for inclusion in this book are on and around the Kitsap Peninsula of northwest Washington. Most of the lakes are in Mason and Kitsap Counties. Also included are a few lakes in Pierce County that are found on the Key Peninsula, as well as some eastern Jefferson County lakes. Mason County includes an area to the south of the Kitsap Peninsula, and also the southeastern corner of the Olympic Peninsula. Those areas are also covered in this book. The author is a ten-time Washington State record holder, with certified weight records for five different species of fish. Catch data for several hundred lakes, dating back to 1981, has been provided to Washington State fish biologists. Data dating back to 1994 has also been provided to the State of Montana. Born and raised in northwest Washington and part of a very outdoor oriented family, the author has spent his entire life exploring new places and looking for new waters to fish. So far the search for fishing opportunities has ranged across the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana.
